Refund a payment

Send all or part of a payment back to your customer.

You can refund all or part of any payment your customer made through Streamlined. Each payment can be refunded once, and a refund is final once issued. Refund everything you plan to return in one go.

Refund a payment

  1. Open the payment from the invoice's Balance summary, or from Transactions.

  2. Click Refund.

  3. Enter the Refund amount. It starts at the full payment.

  4. Add a reason in Memo (optional), then click Issue refund.

Your customer sees the memo on their invoice and in their refund email. Don't put internal notes there.

Note: For a wire, check, or ACH credit, click Next and enter your customer's bank details before you issue the refund.

Where the money goes

  • Card or bank debit: back to the card or bank account your customer paid from, in the currency they paid in.

  • Wire, check, or ACH credit: by ACH to the bank account you enter, in US dollars. Its processing fee shows before you confirm.

Streamlined's fee on the original payment isn't returned.

The payment shows Processing refund, then Refund completed or Partial refund completed. If it shows Refund unsuccessful, try again.

The refunded amount goes back on the invoice, so a paid invoice opens again. See when your customer gets their refund.

When you can't refund a payment

  • It's still processing. Try again once the money has cleared.

  • It was paid in Shopify. Refund it in Shopify. A Shopify refund doesn't return money paid through Streamlined.

  • You recorded it yourself. No money moved through Streamlined, so return it the way you received it.

  • It's already been refunded, in full or in part.

  • It's a bank transfer in a currency other than US dollars.

Tip: If your customer hasn't paid yet and you only want to lower what they owe, record a credit note instead.
