When a customer double paid or overpaid an invoice, you can keep the extra as credit or refund it. Ask your customer which they'd like. Credit is quickest if they buy from you often.
Find the second payment
Open the invoice and look at its Balance summary.
Both payments are on the invoice. It shows a CREDIT badge, and the extra is credit your customer can use.
Only one payment is on the invoice. The other may be waiting on Transactions as a payment that couldn't be matched. It isn't credit yet. You can match it to another open invoice or refund it.
Keep it as credit
Leave the extra on the invoice. When the customer has another invoice with a balance, apply the credit to it, or apply it when you issue their next invoice.
If the second payment is still unmatched, you can match it straight to their next open invoice instead.
Refund the second payment
Click the duplicate payment in the invoice's Balance summary or on Transactions.
Click Refund and keep the full amount.
Add a memo and click Issue refund.
If the duplicate was on the invoice, the refund puts its amount back on the balance. That takes the invoice from credit to zero. If it was never matched, the refund changes no invoice.
A card or bank debit payment goes back to the card or account it came from. A wire, check, or ACH payment is refunded by bank transfer, so you'll need your customer's bank details. See refund a payment.
Note: Refund the duplicate in full. Each payment can be refunded only once, so a partial refund closes it to any further refund.
If you already refunded outside Streamlined
If you sent the money back yourself, for example by check, Streamlined doesn't know about it. The invoice stays in credit. To clear it, record a debit note on that invoice for the credit amount.
