Handle a chargeback

Find the invoice a disputed payment belongs to, then close the balance or contest it.

When your customer's bank takes back a payment, Streamlined records a Chargeback on the invoice that payment paid. The invoice opens again for that amount, and the money comes out of your payouts.

Find the invoice a chargeback is for

  1. Go to Transactions.

  2. Open the Transaction filter and choose Chargeback.

  3. Click the chargeback to see its Customer and Invoice.

  4. Click the invoice to open it.

On the invoice, the chargeback shows in the Balance summary, and Activities shows Chargeback received.

What a chargeback changes

  • The invoice balance. The amount goes back on the invoice, so a paid invoice opens again and may show as overdue. Your customer owes it again unless you decide otherwise.

  • Fees. A chargeback fee may apply. To see yours, go to Settings > Payments, open a payment method, and look under Pricing.

  • Your payouts. For a card or bank debit payment, the chargeback and its fee come out of a payout. They show as their own rows in its breakdown under Reports > Payouts. See how deductions show in a payout.

Close the balance after a dispute

If you agree with the dispute, or worked it out with your customer and they won't pay again, record a credit note on the invoice for the amount. It stops showing as owed.

If your customer pays again, record or match the new payment against the reopened invoice as usual.

Contest a chargeback

Email help@streamlinedpayments.com with the invoice number, the amount, the payment date, and any proof of delivery or agreement you have. The Streamlined team will tell you what's needed. Do the same if you got a dispute notice you don't see in Streamlined.

Returned checks and bank payments

A check that bounces, or a bank payment your customer's bank sends back, can also end up as a chargeback on the invoice. See failed or returned payments.

Note: If your customer tells you about a returned payment before you see it in Streamlined, email the Streamlined team with the same details.
